Is Saying "No Homo" Just a Joke... Or Is It Actually Disrespectful?

I've been thinking about this a lot lately, especially since joining communities like this one where the line between "straight" and "curious" is intentionally blurred.

"No homo" started as a way for guys to say something affectionate or complimentary to another guy while signaling "I'm still straight though." Like: "Bro you look great today, no homo."

On one hand, you could argue it's just language — a verbal tic that's lost its original meaning and is now pure irony. Most people who say it aren't actively homophobic.

On the other hand, the phrase literally translates to "I need to clarify that I'm not gay because being perceived as gay would be bad." That's... not great. It implies that homosexuality is something that needs to be distanced from, even in jest.

In spaces like this community, where we're actively encouraging men to explore without shame, does "no homo" undermine that? Or is it just bro culture being bro culture?

Genuinely want to hear different perspectives.

Intent vs impact. If your gay friend hears you say "no homo" and cringes, it doesn't matter that you didn't mean it. The impact is what counts.

I think it's lost most of its original sting tbh. Among my friend group (mix of straight and gay guys) it's pure irony at this point. But I can see how it'd land differently in different contexts.

I stopped saying it a few years ago. Not because I was "corrected" but because I realized there are better ways to express affection between men. "Full homo" as a joke actually lands better.

Gay guy here. Honestly? When my straight friends say "no homo" it rolls off me. But when strangers say it, it feels different. Context and relationship matter.

Appreciate the range of perspectives. Seems like the consensus is: know your audience, and when in doubt, just drop it.
